Hints to the Work in the KIV Subject Gateway
The KIV gateway mediates information from librarianship and information science.
The gateway offers:
- Meta searching: parallel searches of heterogenous remote resources from a single search interface.
- Additional services for the biographic records.
Resources for search:
Major subject portals.
Major subject WWW sites.
Other electronic online documents. They are catalogued in the KKL database. Full texts are accessible via hyperlinks in records.
Licenced databases are available only for licence holders (libraries) in the Czech Republic, consistent with licence agreements.
The gateway is technically constructed on the MetaLib parallel search engine and the SFX link server.
The KIV Subject Gateway can be accessed by both registered users and guests. In both cases the gateway provides the same search possibilities and the same resources. In addition to that, just the registered users can fully use the My Space service.
Start from the KIV Search, click on the Lock icon and Registration link and complete the form. The registration is free of charge.
Using More Gateways
Parallel Work with More Gateways is not possible.
The user who is the UIG account holder can log in to the KIV Gateway under the same username and password. There is also available an e-shelf to save records and queries and to create notices (i. e. automatically repeating queries, similar to SDI service).
When you wish to work with another gateway, first you have to log out from the KIV.
Limitation of the Work with the gateway
If the work in the KIV Subject Gateway is interrupted for a period longer than 1 hour (as set up now) the session is terminated in idle time. It shows as a switch over to the basic Metalib system, that is UIG. The screen displays to the user that he /she is in the UIG Browser. The user can return to the KIV through clicking on the Browser reference.
The easy resource (i.e database) finding option is available in the KIV Search, the Find Database bookmark.
The Title bookmark enables to browse in the alphabet list or direct search by any word in the title.
The Search bookmark enables to search resource after filling some other data in a simple form.
The Category bookmark enables to find out which resources are available in individual categories.
The selected resources can be saved in the My Resources bookmark in My Space by clicking on the icon.
You can delete the saved resource by clicking on the icon.
The saved records can be used to create your own search groups to be used in the KIV Search, similarly to the Quick Sets. Clicking on the icon causes that a resource is shifted into an interim group that is then saved and renamed by clicking on the icon.
Note: The Find e-journals function is related to the resources used for the SFX.
You can search through the resources valid in the KIV Search.
The KIV Search enables:
To retrieve information on these levels:
- Quick Search: searches of quick sets (pre-selected searchable sets), for less experienced users. You do not select resources for parallel search. Just Quick Sets are used, the groups of databases prepared in advance. An up-to-date resource review is available in the Quick Search Screen.
- Meta Search: federated searching for expert users. You compile resources by yourself. Quick Sets can be used too.
The KKL database is a major Czech database in the LIS area. It is administered by the Librarianship Institute of the National Library of the Czech Republic and it includes the Library and Information Science Literature Library catalogue, analytical records of professional press articles, records of business trip reports etc. There are also the records of Internet resources refering to the full text, most of them were processed especially for the KIV Subject Gateway.
Browsing KKL is based on the database classification by Conspectus categories.
If you browse the category list and click on any of the categories, the query is set in run. It results in the records filed in the particular database categories. There will usually be a great number of records in every category (filed from the latest records to the oldest ones). The filing of the records into the individual categories is ruled by the prevailing content and it does not always characterise the whole extent of a document. Therefore, the results will not be identical with the results of the KIV Search. Only the records of www resources, which correspond with the KIV Subject Gateway function of the way indicator to the www resources, will be filed into the Browsing KKL.
We provide the KKL Browsing only for the first orientation.
Inclusive of My Space and so fully available just for registered users.
When the retrieved record is displayed, it is possible:
- To develop the search (in the KIV Search) after clicking on the Refine button
- To put the record into the basket – by doing so, you save and preserve the record in My Space (e-Shelf) for further work, even for further sessions in the KIV Gateway. However, this is fully functional only if you work as a registered user.
- To save it in your own PC; to send it by an e-mail (both KIV Search and / or My Space.
- To display it in the original format – a record will be displayed in the shape of the catalogue form, i.e. the main entry with label fields (KIV Search: it is suitable especially for librarians – cataloguers).
- It is also possible to save a query: You can save the query (Search History) by clicking on the Previous Search button (KIV Search) and then on the icon of a cross available at a selected query. In this way, the query is saved in the Saved Queries in My Space, where you can further work with it.
The saved query in My Space allows you to create Alert, a permanent query. Click on the icon of a bell and complete the form. The query will be regularly repeated at a given time and sent to an assigned e-mail. The notice can be modified or even deleted in My Space /Saved Queries by clicking on the icon of a pencil.
Do not use the BACK arrow for the moves from screens to functions. Use the menu on the bar again to select what you need, for example: if you want to search when you have displayed more records, click on Search (or if need be, on Meta Search or Quick Search). If only one record is displayed and you want to return to a previous brief display of more records, click on the Spreadsheet display.
By clicking on the Previous Searches button you can get to a review of queries and results. For further work, you can use the sets of results that are grouped based on the relations among records and created by means of the method of dynamic clusters and facets. The thematic clusters can be seen as a hierarchical tree of thematic headings. Each heading gives the number of relevant records and when you click on it, it works as a filter for a given topic. Some of the fields of the record use facets as filters.
Additional services (SFX services) are provided with records:
Obtaining full texts.
Information about availability of a document in Czech libraries.
Linking to a document delivery service.
The services also include links to continue a search for related material on Internet, to search for a book in the Internet bookshop offer, to specify data for SFX via the Citation Linker etc. When the record is displayed, a user can require the menu of the added services by clicking on the icon.
Some of the additional services are available only for so called authenticated users, it means e.g. those who have their own account or who are users of the library that has an access to a licensed service etc. The services limited in this way, are marked in a review by the icon of the lock.
For professional information about SFX, SFX resources and SFX goals, see the UIG website.
- Checking the availability of a document in KKL or via the Union Catalogue:
The search runs by ISBNs, which can fail if data in any of databases are missing or they are given incorrectly. When the service is started, the following screen will display the error message:
The requested record is not in the database.
If you want to be sure, correct your query in the screen. Choose Title as the search field in the pull-down menu and complete the document title instead of an ISBN.
Then start a new search.
