Library & Information Science : the KIV Subject Gateway
Introduction to the History and Functions of the KIV Subject Gateway (Subject Gateway for Library and Information Science)
The KIV Subject Gateway is part of the network of subject gateways roofed by
the UIG – Uniform Information Gateway. The UIG users and users of other subject
gateways will find in it a uniform environment and search tools that are well
known to them.
The KIV Subject Gateway is, above all, intended to satisfy information needs of
librarians, information specialists, teachers, educators and students
of Library and Information Science (LIS). It is included in services
of the Librarianship Institute of the National Library of the Czech Republic
and it is virtually connected with the Librarianship Institute Portal called
Information for Libraries. In this connection, the role of the subject gateway
is double:
- Parallel search of information in the library and information science databases and
- Way indicator to selected documents published on www and catalogued in one of the databases, namely in the KKL database.
The KKL database (KKL = Knihovna knihovnické literatury, The Library & Information Science Library) is administered by the Librarianship Institute of the National Library. It includes the LIS library catalogue, analytical records of articles from Czech professional press, records of business trip reports etc.
In the KKL database, the records of the documents, selected from www, are grouped into the so called partial database that can also be searched with help of the Konspekt categories (see the function Browsing KKL).
The KIV Subject Gateway includes the resources for search that have been selected thematically from the core of the LIS subject. This gateway provides only limited search of literature from other related and border subjects that usually, more or less, deal with the subject of LIS. The exceptions depend on the range of contents of the included databases. It is particularly the KKL database that, due to its functions, has determined a wider range of its content.
The KIV Subject Gateway tools also facilitate receiving the traditional documents by using the service of SFX added functions.
The LIS Subject Gateway has been developed as part of the project called “Coordinated Creation of Subject Gateways” realised in cooperation of the National Library of the Czech Republic and Charles University in Prague. The aim of the project that will be finished in the middle of 2008 is to prepare methodology of building the Czech subject gateways to be linked to the UIG. It was the Librarianship Institute of the National Library of the Czech Republic and the Institute of Information Studies and Librarianship, who played an important role in its establishing and development.
The work started in the second half of 2004. The KIV Subject Gateway went through approximately one year continued pilot operation and at the end of this year it will enter the routine operation. The KIV Subject Gateway will be further developed in full operation. Your sending remarks would be very helpful for us.
